when geared 1:1, encoders will create 2400 steps per revolution, for a resolution of 0.15 deg. 

when geared 1:3.75, you obtain 2400 * 3.75 = 9000 steps per revolution, for a resolution of 0.04 deg.

to see a difference between 1:1 and 1:3.75 please check this video where the altitude encoder was geared 1:1 and azimuth encoder was geared 1:3.75. You will notice the horizontal movement is smoother than the vertical one.
